Status and Distribution of the Barn Swallow in Portugal
The Barn Swallow is a breeding and migratory bird species in continental Portugal. The Barn Swallow is present mostly from February to October, throughout the territory, but less common in heavily forested or mountainous areas.
The Barn Swallow on our land in Alentejo
We see Barn Swallows every year on our land.
In 2022, we have seen Barn Swallows on our land the first day we moved in, and until September 27. One of the most beautiful sights on our land when it comes to birds was the ballet of up to 150 Barn Swallows flying all over us at sunset in summer. It was absolutely wonderful to watch.
In 2025, we had a pair building a nest on the wall of our house, but we are not sure the breeding was succcessful.
Interestingly, we also occasionally see one or two Barn Swallows in November, December and January.
