Pruning our Olive Trees

On our piece of land here in Alentejo, Portugal, we have 54 Olive trees. If you want to see when we did this invetory, feel free to check this :

In the video we also explain how we prune our olive trees. It is a task that I find really enjoyable, as you really focus on the present moment, taking care of the tree while looking at the beautiful sky above you and listening to the birds around you. Of course, if I had to do this 8 hours a day 5 days a week I would probably find it less enjoyable, but I usually only do a few at a time, in fall and winter.

In our area, there are olive trees everywhere. And most of our neighbours usually prune the trees really hard. We have tried one of our trees, but the way we do it is way softer. Not to say it is better, but it is what feels right for us so far.

3 things we do when we prune our olive trees

  1. Cutting the shooters growing at the bottom of the tree

  2. Pruning the dead branches

  3. Trimming the branches growing towards the interior of the tree
